Congratulations to Lisa Paige, Med/Surg/Peds Inpatient Director at Boone County Hospital (BCH), for receiving the 2022 Daisy Award.  Lisa was presented the award at a special breakfast held in honor of Nurses Day/Week.

A co-worker said, “Lisa always seems to go above and beyond for her employees.  She will come in early, stay late or be pulled from what she is doing to make sure the staff has what they need.  I understand because she is a director, and this is part of her job.  However, I am nominating Lisa because of her care for a patient on the floor.  The patient was admitted while traveling through Iowa for his job.  He was diagnosed with COVID-19 and did not have family or friends present to ensure his care or safety.  The patient was also not incredibly fluent in English; despite using the translator, he had many questions.  Lisa continued to stay in contact with his family to ensure his safety at discharge.  Lisa also helped him to get to the hotel where he was staying.  She spoke with his son and the son had concerns about his father’s health.  Lisa assessed the patient and determined he was not taking the medications that were prescribed correctly and assessed whether he needed to be transported back to the hospital for further care.  Lisa took this upon herself and was willing to put her “off time” on the back burner to ensure the patient’s health and safety when no one else was available.  In my opinion this is far above and beyond the standard of nursing, and Lisa acted in this way not for gratification or self-praise.  She did this based on her morals and a caring-heart, and I feel that should be celebrated.”

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day.  The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family.  When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.
